Backpacker tour Istanbul - Kuala Lumpur - Singapore - Thai is planned. In megacities with navigation on an android, the problem is poor (and in some places not at all) GPS / GLONASS coverage. Well, and the battery ... I was thinking of buying something simple, if only the track was written, but this model got stuck (in 2011 I was holding GPSMAP 62). This is my first Garmin navigator, and indeed my first tourist one. I spent the day unhurriedly studying the principles of installing maps, updating firmware, etc. The concept is fundamentally different from Navitel and OziExplorer. As a result, you will need two programs, there are no difficulties. There are practically no problems with pirated maps and you can always legally install an OSM card, of which in bulk on the Internet. Included in the set "Roads of Russia. RF. TOPO." pleased. Especially the presence of holes on the Volga and Akhtuba. At the time of purchase, our herring "went", I chose the place on the navigator where the curb is most suitable for the Volga bank and in a couple of hours I took 30 pieces of excellent crease from the bank. It cannot be compared with the General Staff on Ozi, but it is very detailed and plots a route. On NiMH 2700mAh GP batteries (not new) the device honestly worked for 21 hours and 20 minutes. It was unobtrusive to report low battery power at 3:20 before shutdown. Wonderful. Catching satellites. Everything is simple here. 5th floor of a 9-storey building. Toilet in the middle of the apartment. The nearest outer wall is 9 meters away, plus interior walls. 11 satellites. Screen. Pleases me in the bright sun. I do not know what the Americans have for the technology, but in the mode when the screen does not light up at full power (it automatically goes out 15 seconds after pressing the buttons), everything is visible.Moreover, the more directly the sun's rays fall on the screen, the brighter the picture of the card. Absolutely EVERYTHING is visible. Why they don't do that on mobile phones, I don't know. From the accessories, I additionally bought a branded case (1320 rubles), a carbine (990 rubles) and a Chinese holder with a suction cup for the car (2.84EUR). Branded pribluds can still be found at old prices in online stores. Everything is fully compatible with the previous 62 series models.

Disadvantages: price tag for additional equipment: cover, mount in the car, car charger, native batteries

Comment: I specially took 64, and not 64s or 64st, since mobility is very important in the campaign in the ability to provide battery power, the 64 model is more tenacious. For example, I can say that for a longer duration of operation in 64st they turn off the magnetic compass and barometer, thereby reaching the base model 64, there is no point in overpaying. I forgot to mention the built-in camera in the 64st and the ability to sync with the phone, for me this is not critical.

Comment: I bought Duracell batteries for him, with them in active use mode (constant track recording, GPS + GLONASS mode and frequent display operation) sat down in 17-18 hours.

Disadvantages: For two years of use I got out: 1. Not controllable pixel, shines white, with such a matrix size it is frustrating. 2. I wanted a universal navigator, because I have been using nyvi 610 for a long time, with which I went both for mushrooms and for winter fishing, but which had serious shortcomings, then the battery will run out, then you will not stick it out of my pocket during the rain. There is no universality on the market of navigators, so I bought gpsmap 64 for fishing and hunting for mushrooms, which is partially waterproof and has the ability to operate on batteries / rechargeable batteries ... "The choice of the type of battery was decided by a flashing from the garmin website.

Advantages: Liked everything. I highly recommend checking HOW the route is laid in auto mode! Once accidentally put "bypass asphalt roads" almost ended in failure. Comparing with devices on Androids, the accuracy and speed of work is just super. Not one missed corner, at any speed. Walking for mushrooms, setting markers along the route is absolutely wonderful!

Disadvantages: The only one: often stayed in the car in the summer. Heat began to degrade the gum, which began to peel off. It still works fine, but it looks poor and uncomfortable. The rubber band remained only on the antenna and in some places behind. It's a pity not with me to post a photo

I took a model without a compass, I always take a compass with me, a normal magnetic one.

Disadvantages: There are none, perhaps the price, but an unpretentious device, helped us in an extreme situation
