DJI Osmo Pocket reviews

Rating: 5 out of 5
Advantages: 1. Camera size 2. Ease of use 3. Build quality and packaging 4. Shooting quality (taking into account the size of the device). 5. 4K, 60FPS, SlowMo, TimeLaps 6. Fixation modes on the subject and face (not very convenient from the native screen, but you can still use it too) It is very pleasant that the software is constantly updated, ie. the manufacturer sees problems and solves them, as well as supplements them with new amenities and benefits. A huge plus for a device in this segment is the presence of a screen. Albeit small, but allows you to use the camera autonomously, without connecting a phone. In general, shooting is quite possible.
Disadvantages: 1. Location of the microphone and, as a consequence, sound recording. 2. No strap on the camera itself (the supplied strap is used for the case). Those. if you drop the camera, it will not hang on your hand. 3. When connected to a smartphone, the camera works as a powerbank, actively discharging. But there is hope that they will fix it. 4. Photosensitivity. At dusk the ISO gets too high and the picture is very grainy. However, DJI constantly tweaks something in the firmware, it is possible that it will be tweaked too. 5. No zoom at least digital. In theory, the matrix when shooting at 1080 allows you to zoom 2x (cutting off 4K shooting in fact).
Comment: Be sure to update the firmware! And don't watch the very first (November 2018) camera reviews. These are reviews even before the release, there will be about poor sound quality and problems with focus. BUT! Already in the December firmware, everything was repaired and even further improved. The camera is very pleasant to use, it turns on in a couple of seconds. You can put it in your pocket and it will not interfere. The quality is quite passable for filming "home video" and some kind of technical or blogging filming. Microphones are very poorly placed. There are two of them, but both are looking at the operator. At the same time, they have active noise cancellation and are somewhat directional. Therefore, in a loud room, you will hardly hear what the subject is saying. It is recommended to use an external microphone, but it should only be used as a microphone. connects to the USB port of the camera, at the same time you will not be able to charge the camera while shooting: (However, under "standard" conditions, all the sound is recorded (and in the latest February firmware you can play with the microphone settings) Stabilization - at the expected level and generally corresponds to the promo videos. Close objects will still shake, but overall the picture is much nicer than handheld shooting. The horizon holds well, for people with chronic blockages when shooting - an irreplaceable thing! PS. At Ya.Market there is an error in the description for 20/02/2019: 1. The stabilization is not optical, but mechanical. 2. There is no microphone input. This is an additional USB device, not a regular microphone.

Advantages: A truly pocket-sized camera with excellent stabilization and accurate color reproduction! For this size, the battery is quite tenacious: it was enough for a day of fairly frequent and short filming on a trip. The standard sound is not bad. Color reproduction is very accurate, there is even a flat D-Cinelike profile for subsequent color correction. Really helps to retain more detail in highlights and shadows. A great option for shooting on trips: always with you, you can quickly turn it on, take perfectly stabilized footage and put the camera back in your pocket. For professional work, I even managed to use it a couple of times, when the customers of the aerial survey suddenly asked to remove something from the ground. Manual settings help with this. You can buy compact filters that are magnetically attached. Very comfortably! During the day I always shoot with a polarizer: it cuts out a lot of unwanted reflections, gives a more saturated picture. With the filter, the camera easily fits into the protective case from the kit.
Disadvantages: Lack of wireless connection with a smartphone and an external microphone output
Comment: I bought it right after its release, selling the action to Sonya. I'm still happy with the camera and constantly carry it around with me! A life hack for those who want a cool sound, but without unnecessary crutches: buy a native microphone adapter, angled mini jack male to mini jack female, Edutige ETM-001 microphone and Dead Kitten windscreen. Find the test of this Korean microphone on YouTube, it gives an unrealistically high quality and loud sound! The rest is on the well-known Chinese site. As a result, for ≈4000 rubles, you will get a very compact solution with very high quality sound for vlogs and generally sound recording for more atmospheric videos. Thank you!

Advantages: Size and weight Operating time at 1080 Picture quality - color, detail. Stabilizer and object tracking functions. You can select an object both on the camera and on the connected phone, and the camera will follow this object and turn around. It holds the horizon well and clings very well to the object selected for tracking. Good autofocus and algorithms for determining the subject for focusing, perfectly detects not only faces, but also objects significant for the scene. Most often, good automatic white balance Good stitching of panoramas Interesting and more or less convenient time-lapse, but with a number of software limitations So far, no one perceives it as a video camera with serious quality
Disadvantages: A huge number of mistakes in ergonomics and functionality: no strap, no tripod jack, no WiFi, no external microphone connection, video recording without sound is impossible, no programmed shooting of panoramas larger than 3X3, meager time-lapse settings, no software settings for stabilizer movement, and those which is available only from the phone in the functions for instagram. No zoom. Very narrow dynamic range To fix some of the problems, it is necessary to buy additional accessories, but the problems are not completely solved.
Comment: The stabilizer works very well, but lacks an optical stabilizer in addition to the mechanics. If you shoot on the go, you can see tremors from walking, especially on close objects, on the fact that everything is not so critical in the distance. I highly recommend purchasing a separate module for panoramas. The module could be made more convenient and replace the wheel with a joystick, but even with the wheel it is much more convenient to remove. A full battery lasts approximately 2 hours of HD shooting, less in 4K. When shooting in 4K, the camera heats up very noticeably, but this does not affect performance. There are many minor inconveniences, for example, the inability to put the camera on a flat surface or the absence of a cord attached to the camera, but some of these inconveniences can be corrected with additional accessories, with some you can accept. The camera is very demanding on memory cards, it will not work to shoot 4k on slow cards. There are problems with antifilker - sometimes flickering is very noticeable, especially in LED and energy-saving lamps. In the new firmware, almost all functions from the application have been transferred to the camera, this also applies to settings and operating modes, which is good news. Despite the fact that I wrote a lot of bad things, I am still happy with the camera, because the main thing about it is good image quality and compact size.

Advantages: + excellent stabilization + video recording in 4K 50 frames + Cinelike-D profile for subsequent painting + continuous recording until the battery runs out + autofocus
Disadvantages: - not very wide viewing angle - yaw autofocus, not fast
Comment: An excellent camera, I took myself for general plans on location shooting of a reportage. In Cinelike-D mode, it shoots beautifully and allows you to bring the picture to mind. You just need to take into account that the camera evaluates the metering incorrectly, you need to set the correction +0.7, then everything will be perfect. Writes until the battery runs out. this is very pleasing, since I took a Sony RX100 of any version, it is cut down after 10-15 minutes of recording, the time is constantly floating, in the latest version of RX100VII they made it possible to turn off the overheating warning, but the protection remained and the camera will still shut down itself, but it stands in 5x more expensive than Osmo Pocket, the choice is clear. Having bought a WiFi station, I attach Osmo Pocket to a light stand and control it from my phone remotely, right on the set.

Advantages: Stunningly small and lightweight. The stabilization is normal, at least not worse than that of the Osmo Mobile. Very good video quality. An excellent case, very convenient, thought out to the smallest detail - there are holes for all protruding parts and for the charging cable. Convenient control and good iOS application. Regular updates have greatly improved the device over the past year and even added features. Stands normally on the table by itself. The availability of a large number of all kinds of accessories and mounts on sale anywhere. There is autofocus, that is, you can shoot close objects with background blur. You can shoot both horizontally and vertically. You can attach photo filters! interestingly, the mounts for them are magnetic. Photo filters are tiny, you can hide the device in a case without even removing them.
Disadvantages: The lack of any moisture protection is a bit annoying - all connectors are completely open to dust and water. In this regard, there are no complaints about the moving parts - they probably cannot be protected in principle. There are no built-in tripod mounts, at first it is a little annoying, but then you realize that it would be extra centimeters in size, and compactness is the most important thing here.
Comment: Buy an underwater box for shooting in the rain, I did it, it's very cool.Any regular class 10 U3 card will fit (No need to shell out for V30 even for 4k60). With active use, you will have to buy the necessary mounts - there is a large selection of them. I don't use microphones here, I have no complaints about the sound, it is better here than on my other action cameras, and in my opinion it is no worse than from an iPhone. The battery lasts at least an hour 4k60, which is very good, but I would not refuse a replaceable one, although there is no real need yet. I used their application a little only after the purchase, later I stopped connecting my iPhone for shooting, because there was no need. Autofocus has improved a lot by now (Dec 2019) to near perfect, before AFC was terrible. But I still don't really understand the need for autofocus here at all. After continuous shooting in 4k60, the device from above heats up decently, you can get burned, but it continues to shoot without problems.

Advantages: A small camera that has a mechanical stabilizer and gives a good picture. It is literally put away in the "cigarette lighter" pocket of jeans (without a cover of course).
Disadvantages: The DJI Mimo app doesn't want to work properly with my phone. Everything is displayed on the screen with a 30-second lag and I can't understand anything from the phone, except for downloading files. In addition, the connector is unpleasantly loose and there is little pleasure in attaching the phablet to the camera. It is surprising that wireless connection is offered only as a separate module. This is in an era when a cheap kettle with wifa.
Comment: I do without a phone with the application, and overall I'm happy with the camera. The main task of this camera for me is video filming of some family moments, trips, walks, photographs of some memorable places. Panoramic photos come out very well. In Lightroom, you can then collect large photographs from the original parts, and not compressed by the application. You don't need to carry anything extra, it turns on quickly, it is controlled with one finger. The picture, for my tasks, is more than good. I will add a review. I bought a set of extensions - a remote control with a wheel and a wireless module. As expected, the wireless connection works much faster than the direct connection. Now you can shoot. In addition, the camera has become much more convenient. Firstly, it became convenient to install it, since the wireless module has a wide base with an elastic band. Secondly, the power connection is now from the end. That is, the camera can be safely installed and connected to an external power source. The wheel is more convenient, as it has a vertical / horizontal switch. Good running and speed control of the stabilizer. The buttons, in my opinion, have not the most useful functionality - switching stabilizer modes, selfies and locking the stabilizer. At first it seems that the joystick would be more comfortable than the wheel, but in one plane it is still easier to control, especially on the move. Buttons should be allowed to program. I would hang up tracking the object there.

An interesting novelty. But be sure to buy a control regulator. Those who have used Osmo Mobile will feel the difference. Here, control without this accessory is difficult

Advantages: Image stabilization and quality
Disadvantages: No wireless module. Inconvenient to connect to the phone
Comment: What immediately upset was the lack of a wireless module for connecting to the phone. It's almost impossible to shoot without a phone. You can't even start using the camera without connecting it to your phone. The way of connecting to the phone via the USB connector, given the looseness of the connectors on the phone, is very inconvenient. Falls off constantly. There was no micro usb adapter included. I ordered a wireless module. I hope it will be easier with him.
